Class Descriptions
Privates and Semi-Privates Privates are a great way to help your child pursue their individual goals or get help with specific areas that need strengthening. Contact Crystal Glick, TCRG for scheduling. Adult Class (Ages 18 and up) This class prepares Beginner - Novice adults for recreational, performance, and competitive opportunities, and allows adults to learn at their own pace. Each class includes softshoe, hardshoe, and group ceili dancing. Tir Na Nog Level 1 (Ages 4-7) Tir Na Nog is Gaelic for "land of the youth." This class is for young children who wish to begin exposure to Irish Dance. They will keep a focus on extending attention spans and having fun. Students will work on proper Irish Dance foot positioning, posture, counting music, stretching, hop skips, the sidestep, and their first light jig step. Tir Na Nog Level 2 (Ages 4-7) Young dancers who have mastered the concepts in Tir Na Nog Level 1 will advance to Level 2. Their class time is extended to 1 hour, and they will expand on their dance knowledge by learning hop 1 2 3s, leap 2 3s, two reel steps, two light jig steps, and a 2-hand Reel Choreography. Beginner (Ages 8 and up [this can include adults]) This class is for new students who will learn softshoe Reels, Light Jigs, Slip Jigs, and group choreographies. Students are not required to compete, but they will be encouraged to try their first feis (Irish dance competition) for cultural experience. Dress Code
We ask that your child be properly and modestly attired for class. All children should wear athletic shorts and teeshirts. It is important that your knees are visible for class. In colder weather, shorts can be worn underneath sweats that can be removed once the dancer is warmed up. Hair should be pulled back out of the face. We ask that no skirts, short shorts, spaghetti strap tank tops, bare midriffs, or other revealing clothing be worn. We seek to dress modestly in our classes and we ask that you use your best discretion to that end. All children should wear socks and the traditional Irish gillies or ballet slippers. New students may wear just socks until proper foot attire can be purchased. The floor of the studio is unfinished wood and it is wise to have some type of foot wear. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When does the dance year normally start and end? A. We start new students every January, June, and September, and require a commitment through the end of the calendar year. Continuing students re-register at the beginning of each year for January - December. Q. Will my child have to do performances or recitals? A. Students are highly encouraged to get involved in our frequent community performances, but they have the option to choose dates and locations that suit them. New beginners are never expected to sign up for shows until they feel comfortable and ready with their material and progress. You will be notified of upcoming performance opportunities via email announcements, and interested dancers will sign-up on the studio bulletin board. Because we perform at so many community events throughout the year, we typically do not have a yearly recital. Q. Will my child have to buy a costume for the performances or recitals? A. If your child chooses to compete or perform, they will be asked to be in the school mandated costume, which we rent for $40 a year. Once a dancer reaches Novice, they have the option of purchasing their own individual solo dress. Dancers are never required to make these purchases. Q. Does my child have to do competitions? A. Irish dance competitions (feis) are a big part of the Irish culture, so we do encourage students to experience a feis even if they don't want to be competitive about their dancing. We train all our students to high expectations that prepare them to compete, but leave the choice to the individual family. Beginner dancers ages 3-7 are not eligible to compete until they reach Level 2 in our Tir Na Nog program. Q. How does my child move up into different levels? A. Tir Na Nog dancers typically stay in that class until they turn 8 years old, at which time they move into the regular Beginner class. Beginner, Advanced Beginner, and higher levels advance after receiving a 1st place in each of their dances at a feis. Non-competitive children will move up at teacher's discretion. Q. Can parents stay to watch the class? A. We do allow parents to stay during class if they prefer to do so, and we have a small waiting area. Parents may look through the door to watch their children, but should stay off the dance floor and stage area to avoid distracting the students. We have a small play area for younger siblings, but we expect parents to care for their younger children and be sure the area is clean before leaving. Q. I'm an adult interested in taking the adult class. Do all of these questions and answers apply to me as well? A. Yes. The adult classes are run in the same way as the classes for children except that the training is intended more for dancers to progress at their individual pace. The adults also have the option to perform and compete and are moved up through the different levels in the same way that the children do. |
